"From watching my grandfather sculpt in wood, to jealously asking my father to draw me comic book heroes, art has always been part of my family. For nearly ten years I was lucky enough to share my love of art with kids while I taught high school ceramics, and I feel blessed now to be able to continue sharing this love as a professional artist. My work is based on classic forms and themes, but finished using contemporary methods and glazing. I strive to capture the simplistic beauty of our natural surroundings, and retell a common story in new and exciting ways. My work can be simple and understated, or complex and vibrant, it is in essence, a reflection of me. My hope is that with every piece of art I create, I can tell a part of my story to the world."
David Musser Jr. has been creating beautifully unique pottery pieces for over 15 years. His works have been displayed throughout the United States and he has enjoyed a dedicated following of fans who appreciate his attention to detail, his boldness, sensitivity and creativity.
David uses many styles and techniques in working with pottery and ceramics. Wheel thrown, hand sculpted and molded, vapor glazing and Raku. Currently Arte De Amore is featuring David's Calla Lilly pottery series. Each of these pieces have the beautiful and sensuous form of the calla lilly flower incorporated into it.
The Raku style of pottery was developed in 16th century Japan. Raku pottery is often hand molded, as opposed to being turned on a wheel and they are fired at low tempuratures. The unique glaze effects characteristic on Raku pieces are the result of a reduction techinque. This technique changes the chemical structure of the piece's glaze which causes random and unique patterns of soot, metallic sheen and/or cracks. No two Raku pieces will ever have the same glaze and this is one of the main reasons for the popularity of Raku Pottery. |
